Mr. Rowan’s practice concentrates on patent, trademark, copyright and antitrust litigation and draws on his over 35 years of litigation experience. He has been lead counsel in hundreds of cases, handling jury and non-jury trials as well as adjudications before arbitration panels. He has been admitted to practice in a score of federal district courts from Manhattan to Honolulu, as well as many federal appellate courts, including the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and other courts of specialized jurisdiction, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Rowan also engages in intellectual property counseling and licensing and trademark prosecution and has been selected as an expert witness in attorney-client arbitration and in court-awarded attorney fee adjudications.

Mr. Rowan’s latest jury trial, a complex antitrust-patent case involving a deliberate fraud on the U.S. Patent Office, a subsequent lawsuit based on the fraudulently obtained patent, and an attempted monopolization of a segment of the casino gaming industry, resulted in a jury verdict of $39 million and a multi-million dollar award of attorneys fees. Other patent, trademark and antitrust litigations handled by Mr. Rowan have involved subject matter as diverse as purification of human blood plasma, remediation of contaminated soils, metallurgy and foundry products, solar power generation, marine windshields, asphalt production, medical and veterinary devices, pulp and paper machinery, business forms, literary rights, post-tensioned concrete, processed food, dairy products, plastic and polyvinylchloride extrusion and products, dental and medical radiography and many other industries and products.

Beginning his practice in Honolulu, Hawaii, Mr. Rowan has also handled complex commercial litigation in various other areas of the law such as banking, bankruptcy, construction defects, commercial transactions and trade dress infringement. He has also lectured to bar groups on those subjects. After 12 years with the Cades, Schutte law firm in Honolulu, he moved to Washington, D.C. to help open and manage that firm’s Washington office. In 1988, he joined Nixon & Vanderhye to focus his practice solely on intellectual property and antitrust litigation and counseling.

After attending the United States Military Academy at West Point and the University of Missouri, Mr. Rowan obtained his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School where he was a participant and judge of the law school’s Campbell moot court competition and a research assistant to Professor James White, assisting Professor White in the writing of his law school textbook on Commercial Transactions which is still used in law schools across the country. Mr. Rowan continues to judge moot court competitions at the George Mason Law School and for the American Constitutional Law Association and has authored articles on patent issues published by the Intellectual Property Section of the American Bar Association and by the Gaming Law Review.

Mr. Rowan is a member of the bars of Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Hawaii, including the intellectual property sections of each bar association, and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Mr. Rowan enjoys Martindale Hubble’s AV Preeminent rating, its highest ranking for legal ability and ethics and has been named as a top patent litigator in the 2009 and 2010 editions of The Legal 500.
